The Florida A & M University Environmental Sciences Institute hosts the Environmental Science Summer Camp for students entering grades 9 through 12 in the fall of 2009. Middle school and high school teachers are also encouraged to participate and enhance their knowledge of Environmental Science.

The students choosen to participate in the program are introduced to marine and estuarine sciences through:

  • Hands-on experiences including laboratory experiments

  • Field trips

  • Seminars by professionals in various areas of environmental sciences

  • Tours of environmental research laboratories

  • Exploration of diverse ecosystems

The Environmental Sciences Summer Camp is a three-week summer program provided in cooperation with NOAA’s Environmental Cooperative Sciecne Center (ECSC), and Florida A&M University’s Environmental Sciences Institute (ESI). For 9 years, this program has been serving high achieving high school students throughout Leon County and surrounding areas and providing participants with authentic experiences in environmental science research. Each summer, the ECSC/ESI Summer Camp hosts up to 25 students who have demonstrated interest in and aptitude for science and mathematics.

The ECSC/ESI Summer Camp plays a vital role in preparing its students for their pursuit of careers not only in the sciences, but in all facets of professional life requiring leadership, critical thinking, exceptional communication and expressive skills, and understanding of our multi-disciplinary world. Upon returning to their homes and schools, ECSC/ESI Summer Camp students are more mature, focused and motivated. They are well on their way to becoming aware, involved citizens, real assets to their schools and communities.
